The Optimism of Aunt Mary

We were visiting Aunt Mary in Blackwell, Oklahoma, when there was a tornado alert in the night. Earsplitting sirens woke us in terror. Time to grab what you could and head for the storm cellar. I was a kid so I didn't grab anything. Mom and Dad grabbed their kids. Aunt Mary, whose children were grown, grabbed a six pack of Coke and her costume jewelry! What a woman! How optimistic! You have to know she expected to survive.

This story has been told by some as an example of how silly Aunt Mary was. To me Aunt Mary's "silliness" translated to a buoyancy that could withstand any storm.
